LandMates have to be constantly maintained and adjusted. Wear on parts can be so extreme in a single mission that components require replacement. The technology is so fine tuned that between every mission they require a tune-up and significant testing. Think of them like a formula-one race car. The benefit you get from this is a 7-9 foot tall suit of power-armor that can perform martial arts maneuvers and reacts with the speed of the pilot as opposed to a clunky machine like the power-loader Ripley fought the Alien Queen with in Aliens.
